Buttermead is an ideal rock art site because visitors can appreciate the art without having to drive too far out of town —about 3km. The fairly short walk to the paintings is not too strenuous and suitable for all ages.
The painted rock shelter at Buttermead has polychrome artwork of eland, some of which has been superimposed over earlier paintings. There are many interesting images here, including birds in close association with dying eland and dogs.
It’s an approximate 2km walking route, mostly through the field, with a narrow ledge to pass near the end, close to the rock art at 1km.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes. A hat and sunscreen are advisable. Bring water/snacks with you if you feel you need them.
